Laker 7th grade finishes season 28-1, make Final Four

In Feb.14-20 Issue

In the Kentucky Basketball Association's Middle School Basketball State Tournament played last week and early this week in Lexington, the Russell County Middle School 7th graders advanced to the semi-finals of the 48-team tournament before finishing their season 28-1.

Laker swimmer Alex Miller places 10th at State

In Feb.14-20 Issue
Alex Miller placed 10th in the 100 free and 17th in the 50 free at the State Meet last weekend.

It was an extremely fast meet with many records being broken. Miller bettered his 100 free time by 17 seconds with a finish time of 49.50.

He was also selected as the the "Athlete of Week" after Regionals and was featured on a TV segment last week on WBKO out of Bowling Green.

The Lady Lakers (10-13, 3-3) hosted the Metcalfe County Lady Hornets (10-14) last Friday, defeating them 51-45, avenging an earlier loss this season.

Coach Willie Feldhaus and his 8-12 Mighty Lakers hosted 18-4 Metcalfe County, a district foe, last Friday at Laker Gym and came up short handed as the Lakers were beaten, 80-69.

Richard Smith sentenced to 20 years for Oaks killing

JAMESTOWN - Brandy Oaks was shot and killed September 24, 2003 and three men accused in the crime were in court this week. Tuesday, Richard Collins and Ottis Foster entered Alford pleas in Russell Circuit Court to the crime of complicity to facilitate murder.

JAMESTOWN - A break-in at Grider Drugs on Feb. 6 has resulted in more allegations being filed at court by James S. Faller II. Faller filed a motion for an immediate restraining order against Russell Springs Police Chief Joseph M Irvin and Kentucky Bureau of Investigation Agent John Dudinskie.

Man, 21, dies when thrown from motorcycle

ELI - A Russell County man was killed Sunday afternoon when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed in the Eli community, according to information from the Kentucky State Police.
