The owner of Don Franklin Ford Mercury, Franklin Nissan, Franklin Chevrolet, Pontiac and GMC passed away June 7. Don Franklin, 62, died  3 p.m. Saturday at his home in Columbia.  In addition to his several automotive businesses over the last 41 years Franklin was a leader in area communities. Services for Don Franklin were Wednesday at the Ford Dealership on Greensburg Road in Columbia.

“Working keeps people healthy and active,” said Experience Works Employment and Training Coordinator Karen Miller. “It’s so important for our seniors to keep active.” Many senior citizens in Russell County keep active by continuing to be a part of the workforce with the help of Experience Works programs.

“The drug problem was a lot bigger here than it was there,” said Greg Troutt. So he did what he felt was right, came home and started a new treatment program here. The 2nd Chance Outreach Center, is his way of helping those who walk the path that, without the help of God he would still be on.

This week’s “Russell County Hero” has been a staple in community volunteer work for decades but may be best known as the director of God’s Food Pantry in Russell Springs. Margaret Thrasher says she volunteers around 1,000 hours each year, has been the pantry’s director for six years.

The track and field team had three qualifiers for state completion. The state championships where held May 30 and 31 at University of Louisville.
