JAMESTOWN - A Jabez man has pled guilty to murder in connection with a shooting that occured more than four years ago. Tuesday in Russell Circuit Court, Richard M. Smith, 28, pleaded guilty to shooting Brandy Oakes on September 24th, 2003.
Four others, including Brandy Oakes' wife, are also charged in connection with the murder.
Two other men are charged with complicity to commit murder in connection with Brandy Oakes' death. A fourth defendant, Linda Smith, is charged with complicity to commit murder and reportedly will testify during the trial of the others, Collins and Foster next month.
Court records show that Richard Smith entered into his guilty plea Tuesday without an offer from the Commonwealth. Smith is facing at least 20 years in prison with state law requiring he serve 85% of the sentence due to the violent nature of the crime.
