Feb. 04, 2008This February will bring a bit of 80’s nostalgia to the stage of The Star Theater in Russell Springs, Ky. as one of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory now bursts onto the live stage.
This Broadway show, which was a hit on national tour, is based on the 1984 film that made a star out of Kevin Bacon. The film also starred John Lithgow and Diane Weist as the town’s evangelical minister and his wife, who clash heads on with the young outsider. It marked the film debuts of Chris Penn and Sarah Jessica Parker.
When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local laws, including a ban on dancing. The ban is the brainchild of a preacher determined to exercise the control over the town youth that he cannot command in his own home.
When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her cap for Ren, her roughneck boy friend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid.
To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar-nominated top 40 score including Kenny Loggins’ “I’m Free (Heaven Helps the Man)” and the title track “Footloose”, Sammy Hager’s “The Girl Gets Around,” Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding On for a Hero,” “Almost Paradise,” “Somebody’s Eyes” and the hit single “Let’s Hear it for the Boy.” The movie remains a highlight of the 80s dance-movie phenomenon that included such films as Flashdance, Fame and Dirty Dancing.
Under the stage direction of Gary and Mary McGowan and choreography of Marti Salle of the Dance Shoppe, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind and makes it a must see for everyone.
FOOTLOOSE will play February 16, 17, 23, 24. Saturday shows will begin at 7pm CST and Sunday shows at 2pm CST. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 or in advance for $8. Advance tickets are now available at Grider’s Drug on Main St. across from the theater or from any cast members.
