The 16th District freshmen girls’ basketball tournament was
held this weekend at Laker Gym in the
Russell
County High School,
with the Lady Lakers ending the tournament as champions.
Russell County,
the #1 seed, played #2 seed Metcalfe County
in the first game last Saturday. In that game, the Lady Lakers, coached by
Sarah Roy, beat Metcalfe 56-45.
The Lady Lakers were led in scoring by 7th grader
LeeAnn Grider with 12 points. Grider hit three 3-point shots in the game to
help propel the Lady Lakers to victory. Blair Hoover had 10 points for Russell
County; she also hit two triples in
the contest.
Julie Wethington had 10 points in the game, hitting all six
of her foul shot attempts.
Amanda Cooper had nine points in the game while Lindsay
Ramage had seven points. Tyla Bailey had four points while Heather Burton and
Regan Helm had two points apiece. The girls hit 27 of 39 free throws for 69.2
percent.
In the championship game, Russell
County beat #3 seed Clinton
County 41-30 to claim the title.
The Lady Lakers were led in scoring by LeeAnn Grider and
Lindsay Ramage with 10 points each. Amanda Cooper had six points while Sara
McClure and Blair Hoover both had five points apiece.
Julie Wethington had four points for the Lady Lakers in the
vicory.
