In Mar. 29 issue, Russell County NewsThe Lake Cumberland Power Boat Association is kicking off the 2008 season by sponsoring a one day Boating Safety course, taught by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. The class is open to all interested boaters, not just association members.
The association will be providing lunch for the attendees. Attending this class and getting a passing grade on the the test at the end will net the attendees a safe boating certificate, wallet card and will meet the qualifications for young boaters to operate powerboats with more than 10 horsepower.
Passing this class may also get the attendee a discount on their boat insurance. Check with your insurance agent to verify.
This class will be taught by a certified instructor from the Coast Guard Auxiliary who relates real lfe experiences and answers questions as they come up. It is roughly an 8 hour class. Everyone will learn something.
Along with this class, the Coast Guard Auxiliary will also be performing Courtesy Vessel Examinations for anyone who brings their boat by, either by land or water.
This is a voluntary vessel inspection performed by the Auxiliary. They check for safety related items, proper gear and documentaton as well as verifying operation of key systems on your boat.
If your boat meets or exceeds the basic safety standards, you will recieve a sticker to display on your windshield, notifying law enforcement at a glance your boat meets the basic requirements.
If your boat fails to meet any portion, you get a checklist of items that should be corrected. Again, this is voluntary, so there are no tickets issued. It is simply a chance for you to get your boat examined for free by an member of the Auxiliary so that you can make the proper decisions, before hitting the water.
The class is being held at the Jamestown Resort and Marina at the end of KY-92 in Jamestown. We will meet at the lodge in the Cumberland Room, overlooking the marina and lake.
The date for the class is Saturday April 12th, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Class will probably run until around 3p.m. Vessel inspections will take place all day in the parking lot or at the ships store, if coming by water.
Please call Unlimited Marine to confirm your attendance for this event so we can plan accordingly for paperwork and lunch. Call 270-858-6911 to confirm.
The LCPBA will be there accepting memberships for the 2008 season as well as donations for the Jamestown Fire Boat Fund Drive.
Marine Assist will be on site signing up new members for the year as well.
There will be members from the Coast Guard Auxiliary available to talk to any individuals interested in joing the Auxiliary or who may have questions about the Auxiliary.
This is early enough in the season that we would like to see many of you come out for this event. Start the year out right, get a little knowledge, get your boat inspected for the year and help the LCPBA and the Coast Guard Auxiliary promote boating safety on Lake Cumberland.
