In June 12-18 issue By Greg Wells Times Journal Managing Editor
RUSSELL SPRINGS - Fire Chief H.M. Bottom said the Crusade for Children last weekend was a resounding success and he thanked everyone that gave as well as everyone who participated.
"We collected $4,685.30 last weekend," Bottom said. "I really appreciate everything that everyone gave. And we're really pleased with what we collected."
The chief said he and his men worked at the intersection of U.S. 127 and Ky. 80 from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon collecting from passing cars.
"All the money we collect goes to assist handicapped kids in the county," Bottom added.
He explained that every year since 1970 the department has participated in the program and through those years the local schools have benefited from what was collected, and then some.
"They've helped the school system pay for handicapped busses and equipment for the hearing impaired," Bottom explained.
He said that every year the schools have a need that the Crusade for Children helps them meet.
In addition to the people driving soen the road Bottom said others donate, such as some of the local churches that have donated each year.
"They've always come through and we appreciate all the help," Bottom added.
