JAMESTOWN - One person was killed and two others injured in an ATV accident late Saturday night, July 5, in the Caney Fork Creek area of eastern Russell County.
Russell County Coroner Larry Skaggs said Christopher L. Robertson, 45, of Jamestown, was killed when the all-terrain "mule" type vehicle he was riding in, flipped backward while it was going up a steep incline.
Skaggs said Robertson was riding in the back bed of the ATV and was thrown back; as the vehicle flipped, the ATV landed on him.
Also injured was Burl Hadley of Jamestown who was taken by ambulance to the Russell County Hospital for treatment while the other person involved, Rick Bartrug, reportedly declined EMS treatment.
The two men had walked some distance out of the bottom to a house on Johns Street to call for help.
The accident was called in around 12:30 Sunday morning.
The accident site was in a very remote area of Caney Fork, near the end of Clearfork Road. Sheriff's Deputies and Kentucky State Police officers, as well as fire and EMS personnel, were only able to reach the accident site by four-wheel drive vehicles.
Police officials are saying that alcohol likely contributed to the accident and an investigation is continuing.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:25 Sunday morning.
Kentucky State Police are continuing to investigate.
Skaggs said he ordered an autopsy and the results had not yet returned.
Another recent wreck had less tragic results. Daron McQueary, 30, of Russell Springs was injured when he lost control of the motorcycle he was riding after it hit an animal on Ky. 206. KSP officer Bryan Shepard said McQueary was riding a '95 Suzuki east on that highway when an animal ran into his path.
McQueary, who was reportedly wearing a helmet, was taken to the Casey County Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released. That wreck occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. July 5th about 8 miles west of Liberty.
