The 14-year-old Russell County Babe Ruth team defeated Somerset on Monday, 9-2, and on Tuesday, 15-13, in the District 5 Round Robin tournament to advance to the state Babe Ruth tournament in Lexington.
With only Somerset-Pulaski standing in their way, Russell County used their home field to their advantage and put away the neighboring rival.
The 14-year-olds are coached by Richard Bennett, David Aaron and Josh Popplewell.
In other action at the District 5 Babe Ruth tournament at Laker Field, the 13-year-old Russell County squad, coached by Eric Hadley and Robert Frank, lost to Somerset on Saturday but bounced back to defeat McCreary County, 17-0, on Sunday and Rockcastle County, 12-1, on Monday.
Russell County meets up again with Somerset on Wednesday and will finish too late for this issue. Look for results in next week’s edition.
The 15-year-old Russell County Babe Ruth team is coached by Darrell Selby, Barry Coffey and David Rice.
The 15-year-olds defeated McCreary County on Saturday and Adair County, 10-3, on Sunday to move to their tournament’s title game against Campbellsville On Wednesday.

Teams from six counties traveled to Russell Springs for this tournament which meant a lot to local businesses as well.
District Commissioner Marshall Todd said he was well pleased with the host county’s hospitality.
