RC 14-year-olds go 2-2 in Ohio Valley Region play
In August 7-13 Issue

Russell County’s 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars went 2-2 in Ohio Valley Regional play in Shelbyville, Ind. over the weekend.

In their first game, Russell County was beaten by New Castle, Ind., by a score of 5-2.

New Castle pitcher Conner King gave up six hits while throwing a complete game in the opener

Russell County then faced elimination against Huntington Southeastern, W.Va., and came away with a hard-fought 4-3 victory.

Hunter Best's RBI single in the fourth inning scored C.J. Braywith the game-winning run.

Tyler Robertson went six innings and hit a solo home run for Russell County.

Cody Brown took the loss for West Virginia, who was eliminated.

In their third game, Russell County played the host team, Shelby County, Ind. and put a beatdown on the Indiana team, 15-1 at Donald L. Johnson Park in Shelbyville.

Russell County eliminated thehost team with a 15-hit attack that resulted in a 15-1 win in five innings.

Shelby County managed just one hit in each of the next three innings off starting pitcher Hunter Best and Caleb Russell, who worked the fifth inning.

Two Shelby County errors allowed Russell County to jump out to a 2-0 lead on starting pitcher Luke Engle.

After Shelby County cut the lead in half in the top of the second inning, Russell County answered with two more runs on back-to-back RBI doubles by Blake Aaron and Tyler Robertson.

That was more than enough runs for Best, who gave up just three hits in four innings of work.

In their final game, Russell County was beaten 13-2 by Youngstown, Ohio, who won the Ohio Valley Region’s 13-year-old title last year.

Ohio’s G.J. Senchak had a three-run home run in the first inning and a two run homer in the fourth.

It was an astonishing run for the 14-year-olds who played with only 10 players.

The team won the district and state tournaments before heading to the Ohio Valley.

Rick Frank, the Ohio Valley Region’s Assistant Commissioner lauded the play of Russell County, saying that it was the first time a team of 10 players had ever made it to the region.

The team is coached by Richard Bennett, David Aaron and Josh Popplewell.
