Lady Laker volleyball wins 45th district title

In Oct. 16-22 Issue

The Russell County Lady Laker volleyball team won the 45th District Girls Volleyball tournament after defeating McCreary Central and Wayne County on Monday in Monticello.

Against McCreary County, Russell County won two in a row, 25-21 and 25-20.

In the finals against Wayne County, Russell County won 25-29 and 25-21.

Four Lady Lakers were named to the all-district tournament team: Tyla Bailey, Bethany McQueary, Kasey Keaton and Tara Johnson.

Upon returning to Russell County, the team paraded up and down US 127 to celebrate their championship win.

The team has one senior, Stephanie Rizenbergs.

Rizenbergs was honored on volleyball senior night last Thursday as the Lady Lakers hosted Rockcastle County at the Russell County Middle School.

In freshman action Rockcastle came away victorious over the ladies, 21-6 and 21-16. The junior varsity ladies also were defeated 22-20 and 21-13.

In varsity action, the Lady Rockets took two of three from Russell County to win the match. Russell County won the second game 25-21.

Congratulations to the Lady Lakers and their coaches, Sarah Roy and Kelly Pierce.
