In Nov. 27 IssueBy Derek AaronTimes Journal Sports EditorCoach Michael Carpenter's Russell County Middle School Lakers have gotten off to a blazing undefeated start so far this season.
First, on Nov. 15, the RCMS Lakers traveled to Mercer County to play in the Pre-season Panorama Tournament.
Carpenter’s 7th and 8th grade teams both came away with victories in their games while the Russell County 6th grade team, coached by Jason Foley and Nick Bertram, also came away with wins over Casey and Mercer Counties.
The RCMS Lakers then traveled to Lebanon on Nov. 20 for 7th and 8th grade action.
The 7th grade Lakers came out on top with a close 27-25 victory. Scoring for the Lakers was Blake Ellis with 15, Alex Turner with 6, Brett Kimbler with 3, Matt Adams with 2 and Ben Bertram with one point.
The 8th grade Lakers won by 17 points over Lebanon, 47-30. Nick Britt scored nine points, Lucas Whittle scored eight, Barton Mann, Garrett Stephens and Dustin Pierce all scored seven a piece, Chris Burchet had 5 points while Jalen Bennett scored 4 points in the win.
On Monday the RCMS Lakers hosted the Taylor County Cardinals in their home opener.
The 7th and 8th grade teams both came away with impressive wins as the 7th grade won 32-16 and the 8th won 49-28.
Scoring for the 7th grade was Alex Turner with 10, Adams with 6, Kimbler with 5, Ellis with 4, Coffey, Bertram and Lawless with 2 and Hadley with one point.
In the 8th grade game, Jalen Bennett led the way with 15 points followed closely by Nick Britt with 14. Whittle had 12, Burchett had 7, Dustin Pierce scored 6, Mann and Stephens both tallied 3 while T.J. Pierce score two points in the victory.
