... and the cold parade of years
In Dec. 20 Issue
Russell County News

The economy is going to crash. The gays are going to take over and turn your kids queer. Rock music is going to destroy our blessed society.

You need to fear these things.

You must be afraid.

You should pay no attention to the little man behind the curtain.

It seems like that is all I hear. People are pushing fear like it was the opiate of the masses.

Maybe it is.

When everyone is busy worrying about what people are doing with, or to, their private parts it is easy to forget that most people in this country don't have health insurance.

If you are deep in fear about the economy you likely won't notice that the political parties are saying whatever it takes to get elected, while the politicians are doing whatever it is they want to feather their nests.

Should some remembrance creep into your mind of those young men and women dieing in a cold desert then there is always a little chest beating about fighting there not here.

A little overseas carnage among blackish, brownish or yellowish people can dissuade you from thinking too hard about what harvest our policies and actions are planting over there.

Bailouts! Corporate fatcats and golden parachutes!

What better way to keep you from noticing you haven't had a raise in years but the cost of everything you are buying keeps going up?

Should that fail there is always Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan or some other star to point at and shake your head.

I'll let you in on a secret. It isn't that bad out there. It hasn't been that bad out there since the depression in the 30s. Well, it hasn't been that bad out there over here…

Over "there," where some of the people we fear come from, it really stinks.

I knew someone who was a guard at Guantanamo Naval Station during the Haitian "crisis." That soldier was amazed by how much they enjoyed living in our "prison camp."

Seems the worst conditions we were willing to allow a person to live in were far better than the best any of them had in their own country.

I have known people from what the Brits call Asia, and we call India and Pakistan. Muslim or Hindu they were all nice people. They all worked harder than I ever have and they universally stated that being able to live in the west was what made their lives as good as they were.

Want to know another secret? Since the people in those countries are very unhappy their leaders have to search out some way to direct their people's anger away from their government and their church.

Guess what they found is as good as fear is at distracting people… Hate.

When your world stinks and your church or your government is always blaming someone else for that you start to believe it.

What, you don't believe that? Right and fearing that some nancy-boy is going to have the same legal rights you and your ex-wife or ex-husband had hasn't distracted you from the fact that you are one hospital stay away from bankruptcy…

Hey America look, see the shiny object! Look, its over here, no its over there. Look! Look! Good voter, good voter. Now hate the people who don't think like you and your world will be so much better.
