In Jan. 22 IssueBy Derek AaronTimes Journal Sports EditorThe Russell County Lakers defeated the host Southwestern Warriors 59-58 in a nail biter Tuesday night to improve their record to 16-1 on the year.
Three Lakers were in double figures led by Bryon Ellis with 16, Robbie Bell with 14 and Bryson McFall with 10 points.
Zach Carney had nine points and 10 rebounds while Adam Justice scored six points. Lucas Justice added four points for the Lakers.
Coach Willie Feldhaus’ Lakers shot 42 percent from the field against the veteran Warriors, who started five seniors.
Trevor Jones led Southwestern with 21 points.
Russell County’s scrappy play down the stretch was just too much for the Warriors to handle.
The 11-4 Lady Lakers were downed by the Lady Warriors, 65-39, in the night's first game. LeeAnn Grider scored a dozen points and Blair Hoover had 11 points.
Julie Wethington and Lindsay Ramage had five points each while Kyla Thomas and Heather Burton scored two points each.
Amanda Cooper and Rachael Miller both tallied one point each. Coach Craig Pippen’s Lady Lakers shot 42 percent from the field but had 26 team turnovers that led to 29 points for the Lady Warriors.
