Last Thursday the Laker swim team traveled to Lexington to compete in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association 2009 Region 3 Swimming and Diving Championship.
“This year's regional meet was the fastest Regional I've seen," said Coach Ginny Lengel. “Russell County has reason to be proud of our team.”
Out of 24 teams, the Lakers came in 8th and the Lady Lakers came in 14th. Overall, the team placed 11th. Russell County had seven swimmers drop time in every event they swam and eight others drop in at least one swim.
Alex Miller posted his fastest swims in both the 50 and 100 freestyle which qualified him for the State Championship in Louisville this week. He was also awarded a spot on the Men's All-Region 3 Team.
The Laker Men's 400 Free Relay team also made the State competition this year. The swimmers on this team are Dustin Ballenger, Dakota Meece as well as two seniors, Zach Grider and Alex Miller.
Coach Lengel said, “We are looking forward to some amazing swimming in Louisville this week and in our new Natatorium next season.
“While we will really miss our seniors, we are excited by the talent and commitment we are seeing in our young swimmers. We can foresee Russell County becoming a force to be reckoned with in Kentucky swimming.”
