In Feb. 19 IssueBy Derek AaronTimes Journal Sports EditorThe Russell County Laker freshman boy’s team captured the 16th district title this past weekend in Cumberland County while the freshman Lady Lakers were runner-up for their district title.
On the boy’s side the Lakers defeated Clinton County 48-37 and Metcalfe County 46-30 to win the championship.
Against Clinton County the Lakers were led in scoring by Hunter Best with 16 points and Tyler Robertson with 12 points. C.J. Bray scored seven points while Cesar Prudente had six points. Blake Aaron had five points while Brandon Bunch had three points. Ethan Pike also scored one points against Clinton County.
In the championship win against Metcalfe County, the Lakers were led in scoring by Best with 15 points, Aaron with 13 points and Robertson with a dozen points. C.J. Bray also scored six points. The Laker freshman ended their season with a 9-3 overall record.
On the girl’s side, the Lady Lakers started Saturday with a 41-30 win over the Lady Bulldogs of Clinton County.
LeeAnn Grider scored 16 points to lead Russell County while Amanda Cooper had nine points and Julie Wethington had eight points. Regan Helm scored seven points while Ally Harris scored one points.
In the district title game, the Lady Lakers were downed 44-41 by the Metcalfe County Lady Hornets.
Leading the way for Russell County was Cooper with 12 points and Wethington with 10 points. Grider scored eight in the loss while Helm scored six points. Harris scored five points.
