WOLF CREEK NATIONAL FISH HATCHERY: Kentucky Questing Workshop a Success at
Always seeking out new ways to help visitors explore and learn more about the site, Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery served as organizer and host for a Kentucky Questing Workshop on February 24th and 25th, 2009.The event, a first of its kind for Kentucky, featured nationally known Quest designer and author Steven Glazer.Questing is a place-based education model of creating and exchanging treasure hunts in order to collect and share a community’s distinct natural and cultural heritage, special places and stories.Quests are unique too in that the information found in each can easily be correlated to core content used by teachers across the state and can also serve to be a key conduit for tourism and linking up various sites.Because of this versatility, the workshop drew support and interest from a myriad of organizations and agencies, which led to securing over $5,000 in sponsorships, helping to keep costs low for the many participants. In fact, due to the overwhelming support, each registrant paid only $20 for the two days of programming, materials and meals, and lodging stipends were also offered to help with costs. All total, over 20 people attended the event, representing 18 different agencies/organizations.For those in attendance, the workshop featured two full days of hands on, engaging learning on how to research, plan and design a site based Questing adventure.
Sponsors for the 2009 Kentucky Questing Workshop include the following:Kentucky Environmental Education Council (KEEC), Southern and Eastern Kentucky Tourism Development Association, Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Lindsey Wilson College, Kentucky Division of State Parks, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc.
