In April 2 IssueTwo Russell County residents were airlifted to the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center after a scary head-on collision on Monday afternoon and one of the injured faces a DUI citation, according to Kentucky State Police.
Trooper John Barnett investigated the collision that occurred just after 5 p.m., one mile east of Russell Springs, near the intersection of KY 80 and Foley Road.
Bobby J. Hawkins, 29, of Jamestown was traveling east on KY 80 in a 1995 Dodge Intrepid when the trooper reports that he crossed the center line and entered the west-bound path of a 1994 Chevy Blazer being operated by Cheryl Lindberg-Simmonds, 48, of Russell Springs.
Because of the intense work by firefighters necessary to extract both drivers from the crumpled wreckage and the wait for air-ambulance services to pickup the patients, KY 80 was blocked for over an hour late Monday afternoon.
Both drivers were wearing a seat belt, according to authorities. Police said Hawkins has been cited for allegedly driving under the influence.
Assisting Trooper Barnett at the scene was Trooper Adam Likins, the Russell County Sheriff's Department, Russell County EMS, and the Russell Springs Fire Department.
