Cruisin': Russell County car clubs getting ready
In April 4 Issue
Russell County News
By Ron Cowell, Columnist

The “OUTSIDERS Car Club have been gearing up for another season of Cruise Ins. Last year  was the first year of Cruise Ins for the newly formed club and it proved to be a very good year.  The Cruise Ins last year was held at the Lake & Shake Grill, which is no longer in business so the location has been changed this year. Also the night of the Cruise In has been changed from Thurs. to Friday.

This year the Club has voted to move their Cruise in to America’s # 1 Drive in, The Sonic in the Key Village Shopping Center. They will be held on the second Friday of each month starting in May and running through the month of September.

The activities will get under way at 6:00 PM and will end when the last car leaves the lot. They will have “Ron’s Rockin Oldies to provide music of the 50’s 60’s 70’ and 80’s. There will be a 50/50 raffle at each event that will not only give you a chance to win half of the pot but also make you eligible for all the other prizes that will be handed out at each Cruise. Plus if you get hungry you can order some great food from SONIC.

For those of you who attended the last Cruise last year you might remember the club gave away a lot on nice prizes. This year they have decided that they will give away prizes at all the Cruise Ins. So far it looks like they will be giving away hundreds of dollars worth of great prizes this year.

Many local businesses have got behind the club and sponsored their Cruise Ins this year. The club will be giving away Cash prizes donated by Premier Integrity Solutions. Gift Certificates from Long John Silvers and the Jamestown Café. Some special prizes from G & J Auto Sales in Midtown. The Golden Shear Barber Shop is giving away free haircuts.

R & D Recording has donated  CD Box sets of the Music of the 60’s, 1961 through 1969. Strings and Things Music Center has donated a number of items. Along with many, many other wonderful prizes you can win at the Cruise Ins this year. This is just a sample of the gifts that will be won by  the public at this year’s Cruise Ins.

All winter long the club has been meeting and planning for this years events and looking forward to a good turn out and a lot of fun at this years Cruise Ins.

The Ol Boys Toys Car club is getting ready for another season of Car Shows and Cruise Ins for this summer. The Ol Boys toys Car Shows will take place the same as last year. They will be held in the K Mart parking lot by Subway the third Saturday of each month from 3:00PM to 6:00PM. Their Shows will start in April this year and run through September.

Once again this year they will be passing out trophy’s for the top cars in the show. The music of the past will be provided by Denver Wilson for the shows again this year.

These folks work very hard each year putting on a fantastic show each month through the summer. Everyone who attends has a good time and enjoys the day.

Last year Ol Boys Toys Club member Gary Sullivan had an accident with his street rod. This year he has a surprise for everyone. He took his wrecked street rod and converted it to a “Woodie”. He has done all of this himself and plans on having it ready for this year’s cruises.

He has worked very hard on this molding parts out of wood and sanding and finishing along with all the mechanical work involved in the changeover. Great job on that car Gary and we are all looking forward to seeing it at the shows and cruise ins this summer.

If your Car Club is having an event and you would like us to tell everyone about or someone who you would like to see featured in this article send all information to, Information on upcoming events needs to be in at least two weeks before the event.

If your Club or church or group is having an event and you would like to display some classic cars at that event let me know at least two weeks before the event.

I will put you in contact with one of the clubs that will gladly bring their cars out for display.
