Lakers put away Hornets, fall twice at River City Classic
In April 16 Issue

Behind the strong pitching of senior Adam Black, the Laker baseball team put away the visiting Metcalfe County Hornets, 3-1 for their first district win of the season.

Black struck out 11 Hornets in the complete game victory. Senior Cody Stephens went 1-2 from the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Lakers Taylor Hutchison and Cody Coffey accounted for the game’s other RBI’s.

Laker junior right fielder Zach Carney and pitcher Adam Black also had hits in the game while Stephens also stole one base for Coach David Rexroat’s team.

In the junior varsity game against the Hornets, the Lakers limited the visitors to just one run to get the 6-1 victory.

Laker Taylor Hutchison pitched two innings to pick up the victory for the Lakers.

Hutchison also went 2-2 at the plate with a double, a stolen base and two RBI’s while 8th grader Tyler Robertson went 2-2 with two doubles and an RBI.

Laker Hunter Best also went 1-2 with a double and scored two runs while Blake Aaron also singled and scored two runs in the lopsided victory.

Caleb Russell also scored one run for the Lakers. Russell and Jordan Best relieved Hutchison on the mound in the win.

This past weekend the Lakers traveled to Owensboro to play two games in the River City Classic.

In the Lakers’ first game they were defeated 7-2 by Christian County. Carney, Warriner, Stephens and Dillon Downey all singled in the defeat.

In the Lakers’ final game they were defeated by Owensboro Apollo, the host team and number one team in the state, 14-1.

Laker catcher Dillon Downey was injured in the game when he fouled a ball back into his face, breaking several cheek bones. Downey is out indefinitely.
