Spring sports will once again include drag racing in Russell County. Lake Cumberland Dragway is under new ownership and open for hot rod, high performance competition.
"I've been meeting with drivers to decide what kind of show we're going to put on," said owner Mike Stamper of Borden, Indiana.
Stamper, a 20 year veteran of racing, plans an inaugural race and grand opening Saturday, April 25 with qualifying at 3 p.m. CST and racing beginning at 5 p.m.
"We'll start with test and tune on Friday at 5 p.m.," said Stamper. "There'll be cars on the track Saturday night until about 10 p.m."
As a part of the grand opening, Stamper said they will give away door prizes and hold a 50/50 drawing. Laker Country 104.9 will broadcast live from the race Saturday night.
Last Friday, the track hosted a test and tune with 39 racers practicing before this weekend's opening race.
"We had 120 through the gate for a total of about 171 in attendance including the race teams," said Stamper. "It went very well."
Lake Cumberland Dragway, located on Airport Road in Jamestown, will host races each weekend throughout spring and summer months.
