In April 30 IssueWhile week three of the Laker tennis season began with two rain-outs, it ended strong as both the Laker Boys and Girls teams posted victories over the Adair County Indians on Friday, April 24th. The Boys defeated the Indians 5-2 while the Lady Lakers won 4-2.
Kerry Kingry and Cody Womack got the Laker Boys rolling with wins in singles play. Kingry disposed of John Evans 8-0 while Womack held off a stiff challenge from Steve Chafin in a 6-4 win. The Lakers got a doubles win from Kyle Garner and Alex Mann who posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Blake Aaron and Matt Poff.
Jansen Turner and Joe Edmonds and Scott Hoover and Kody Pickett also secured doubles victories with Turner/Edmonds winning 6-3 and Hoover/Pickett notching a 6-1 win.
The Lady Lakers split their two doubles’ matches against the Lady Indians with Kim Johnson and Britanni Rexroat winning at #2 doubles 6-3. The most highly contested matches of the day were in singles play as three of the four contests were decided with tiebreakers. Katie Dalton won 7-6 (10-8) over Chafe, while Kim Johnson was a 7-6 (8-6) winner over Powell. Kayla Marcum dropped a heart-breaker 7-6 (7-2). Alisha Dockery won 6-4 playing from the #4 seed.
On Thursday, April 23rd, the Laker squads traveled to Wayne County to face a tough Cardinals team who hosted at their beautiful six court facility. The Lady Lakers were playing short-handed with four of the top six seeds out due to the Senior Trip. The Lady Cardinals made quick work of the Lady Lakers winning 9-0.
The Laker Boys dropped an 8-1 decision to the Cardinals. Cody Womack got the only victory winning at #2 singles over Tanner Neal 6-2. Kerry Kingry dropped a heartbreaker at #1 singles losing in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3) while Jansen Turner took Matthew Neal to the wire before losing 7-5. Corey Smith, Alex Mann, and Kyle Garner played highly competitive matches before dropping sets to their Cardinal opponents. Both the Laker Boys and Girls teams are 4-3 on the season.
