In May 7 IssueResponding to a reckless driving complaint Deputy Sheriff Nick Bertram said he attempted to make a routine traffic stop on a Camaro, and the chase was on, but it ended quickly in a wreck.
Bertram said that about 7 p.m. Sunday night he saw a black Camaro driven by Rickey Lawless run a stop sign.
But he said the 33-year-old Jamestown man’s vehicle sped away before it ran into a red pickup truck after less than a mile.
The wreck occurred on south US-127 on the Wooldridge School House Road south of the Greasy Creek Bridge.
Bertram said that Lawless lost control of his vehicle, began spinning in the roadway, and then collided head-on with the vehicle being driven by Matt Jones, 42, of Jamestown.
Jones received serious injuries and was taken to the Russell County Hospital and then transferred to the University of Kentucky Hospital where he is reportedly in serious condition.
Lawless was taken to the Russell County Hospital for treatment of injuries and then later released into police custody.
Bertram reported that Lawless was charged with driving under the influence, second offense; Fleeing or Evading Police, 1st degree; and Wanton Endangerment, 1st degree. Lawless was lodged in the Russell County Jail.
