Laker Boys tennis show improvement at regional
In May 14 Issue

The Boys 12th Region Tennis Title came down to the finals of the Boys Singles as undefeated and No. 1 seed Kyle Jeffries of Casey County faced No. 2 Seed Kyle Chadwick of Mercer Co.  As the last day of competition began, Casey and Mercer were tied for the team lead with 11 points apiece.

Jeffries and Chadwick slugged it out in a great match which saw Jeffries prevail 6-4, 6-3.

It was the closest match anyone had played Jeffries all year.   The win clinched the title for the Rebels who now advance to the State Tournament to be held at the University of Kentucky May 21-23. Ross Baeker and Ethan Hobson of Danville defeated Ryan Martin and Brad Jeffries of Casey County 6-7 (2-7); 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 to take the doubles title.

Coach Eric Bennett was proud of the showing his young Lakers made as the team finished 7th in the 15-team field.   The Laker Boys won three out of four of their first round matches. Sophomore Kerry Kingry won his opening match 6-1, 7-5 over Alec Delucca of Danville. Senior Corey Smith had an easier time as he cruised past Brandon Reynolds of Madison Southern 6-0, 6-0.

Sophomores Cody Womack and Jansen Turner opened their doubles play with a decisive 6-2, 6-4 win over a duo from Southwestern.   Sophomore Kyle Garner teamed with Junior Scott Hoover to face No. 8 seed Heathman and Meek from Mercer Co. The Mercer team prevailed 6-0, 6-2.

The round of 16 proved much tougher for the Lakers. No. 8 seed Kingry took on Senior Justin Peavler of Mercer Co.  The two staged the longest match of the round as they slugged it out for over two hours.  Kingry won the closely contested first set 7-6 taking the tie-breaker 11-9 before Peavler staged a come-back to take the last two sets and the match 6-7(9-11), 6-1, 6-1.

Corey Smith had a tough draw in round two, as the No. 6 seed Florian Staudt of Casey Co defeated him 6-1, 6-0.  Womack and Turner also faced a tough opponent in the second round as they took on No. 7 seed Martin and Bivens of Somerset. After losing the first set 6-4; Womack and Turner had their chances in the second set.  With the score tied 4-4, Turner was serving at 40-love before Martin and Bivens turned the tables and took the game and a 6-4, 6-4 win.

Coach Eric Bennett was not only proud of how the Lakers played but also how the boys conducted themselves on and around the court as they received several compliments from the tournament director on their acts of sportsmanship.
