The Lady Laker Tennis team will be traveling to Berea College this Friday, May 15th, to begin play in the Girls 12th Region Tennis Tournament. This year’s tournament should prove highly competitive with several teams having a shot at the team title.
Mercer County, Danville and Casey County all have very deep teams; however, Boyle County bolstered by No. 1 singles seed, Ce Ce Witten, and No. 8 Celeste Hurt could prove dangerous.
While the team title could prove to be a 4 or 5 team race, the individual singles title is all but decided.
Freshman Ce Ce Witten enters the tournament as the three-time defending 12th Region champion. Last year she made it to the finals of the
State Tournament. Witten is the No. 2 ranked girls player in Kentucky and the No. 12 ranked 16 & Under girl in the Southeast.
Her only possible challenge will come from No. 2 seed Senior Haley Hart of Lincoln County.
Haley also advanced several rounds at state last year.
Lady Laker Ines Stricker notched the No. 7 seed in the region draw after finishing the regular season with a 4-2 record in her singles play.
Kayla Marcum will also be competing in the singles portion of the tournament for the Lady Lakers.
In doubles play, Senior Katie Flanagan will be teaming with Junior Katie Dalton while
Stephanie Rizenbergs will partner with Lindsay Sayers. Mercer Co, Wayne Co, and Danville place the top three doubles teams in the tournament.
Play should begin at 4pm ET at Berea College and Madison Southern High School in Berea. In case of inclement weather, the tournament will be moved to Eastern Kentucky University’s indoor courts.
The Lady Lakers are coached by Eric Bennett and Lou Ann Flanagan who hope their team will get a quick start in Friday’s opening round.
