Cruisin': Take a trip down Route 66
In May 23 Issue
Russell County News
By Ron Cowell, Columnist

For those of you who know me, you know for me, it don’t get any better than a group of people setting around talking about classic cars, old rock and roll, old times and running memories though my brain. When you attend  car shows and cruise ins that’s just what you have. I’m always looking for a place to go, not only recall old memories but make new ones as well.

Once or twice a year I think it  would be perfect if I could go back in time and enjoy the surroundings and fill my brain with a car load of new memories. Talk about old cars and old music and good times.

I ran across a guy this past weekend that told me about The Route 66 Car Show that is held every September in Berwyn, IL. As soon as he mentioned Route 66 my ears perked up and I was ready to talk. I always wish I could have taken a ride down the old Rt. 66 many years ago. After talking with Bob I realized that is still possible in a way by attending this Route 66 Car Show.

The town is over run with Classic cars, hot rods, classic motorcycles all lined up down Ogden Avenue. There are rockabilly bands, food vendors and people of all ages who want to talk cars, music and old times.

I know most of you have been to car shows and know that some are bigger and better than others. From the research I have done on this show, it’s one of the best in the country.

Even with all the cars there, finding a place to park is not a problem. The Route 66 car show is held right in the middle of town just west of Chicago. Just reading about it gets me all worked up and ready to start packing to head out.  One other thing that makes this show such a good one it is free!!!!!!!!!!

There is a big swap meet along with the show and people selling all kinds of other things from years gone by. You never know what kind of treasure you will find walking around the show.

This year will be the 19th Annual Historic Car Show in Berwyn. The show is always held in September and gets going about 7:00am and usually runs to 4:00pm CDT.

It’s not only a fun time but through the years they also raise money at the show for a good cause. Back in 2007 they gave a trophy away called “The Berwyn Route 66 Woman’s Pink Ribbon Award to raise money for the awareness of breast cancer.

Berwyn has always been a great Route 66 Town with a thriving, dynamic and a fast growing community at it’s heart. This year they are encouraging all classic car lovers to come to the show and rediscover the great automotive heritage of Berwyn’s historic Route 66.

In the past they have had prizes for the best Pre-WW-II vehicle as well as awards in over 80 different categories. Last year there were over 500 beautiful classic vehicles at the show.

If you’re wondering what to do for a vacation this year and would like to include that Classic Car of yours, or if you are just looking for a fun place to visit, head to Berwyn for the 19th Annual Route 66 Car show this year.

The 2009 Rt66 Car Show will be held on September 19th, 2009. Mark your calendars now and check www.berwynrt66.com for more information and updates on this year’s show.

If your Car Club is having an event and you would like us to tell everyone about or someone who you would like to see featured in this article send all information to, djron47@yahoo.com . All information on upcoming events needs to be in at least two weeks before the event.

Also if your Club or church or group is having an event and you would like to display some classic cars at that event let me know at least two weeks in advance.. I’m sure one of the several clubs around Russell County will be happy to display their cars.
