In May 28 IssueBy Misty MatneyRCHS Track CoachThis past Friday two Russell County seniors competed at UofL in the KHSAA State Championships.
Ashley Wilson and Bryon Ellis competed in the Class AA championships with Wilson competing in the Shot and discus and Ellis competing in the discus event.
Ashley Wilson placed 4th overall in the shot put event after a shaky first flight. She made it to finals and came from 11th ranked to the 4th position. Last year in the same event she placed 3rd overall.
Ashley also made finals in the discus and placed 6th overall. The discus event is an event she did not even make it to state in last year.
Ashley was disappointed she did not place higher in the shot put, but considering she made in to state in both her events and medaled in both events is very impressive.
There are so many athletes that do not even get the chance to go to state, and Ashley is one of the few athletes that not only competed in both events but medaled in both.
I am extremely proud of Ashley and her accomplishments in track and field. I will miss her next year in track and just being around her and her bubbly personality at the meets. She will continue her track and field career at Campbellsville University next season.
Bryon Ellis ended up placing 11th overall in the discus event. The discus event is an event Bryon has dominated in high school.
Bryon has broken the school record and had endless first place wins in the event. Last year Bryon made it to the state championships but was unable to attend because of surgery.
Bryon threw a shorter distance in the first flight, and it was not enough to take him to finals. It was disappointing for him and his ending career, but he has done an amazing job throughout his track and field career.
I am so proud of Bryon as a student athlete because he shows great sportsmanship when he is competing and when he is not.
