An Independence Day celebration was a unanimous approved Friday afternoon at the Russell Springs City Council.
Mayor Hollis DeHart had prefaced the discussion with the statement that he wanted to avoid any issues with Jamestown, which recently decided to pass on a 4th of July celebration this year. But he said he would move forward with whatever decision was made.
Saying that the community was looking for some sort of a celebration for the nation's birthday the council directed the mayor and city staff to proceed with planning a celebration.
Some asked if those who have organized the Lakefest over the last few years would be interested in supporting this event.
Members of the council said they'd had people contact them asking that the city hold the event, and some plans and volunteers were mentioned at the meeting.
