In July 9 IssueThe Russell County 13, 14 and 15-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star teams begin district tournament play this coming weekend at the Lindsey Wilson College baseball complex in Columbia.
The 13-year-old Russell County team plays Saturday at 1 p.m. against Adair County, with the winner facing Somerset on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The championship will be played next Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The 14-year-old Russell County team plays a best of three series against Somerset with the first game on Saturday at 4 p.m. and the second game on Sunday at 4 p.m.
If necessary, the third game will be played next Thursday.
The 15-year-old Russell County team plays Rockcastle County on Saturday at 7 p.m. with the winner playing Green County at 7 p.m. on Sunday. The 15-year-old district title will more than likely be decided next Thursday.
Russell County’s 15-year-old team won the east Kentucky state title last season as 14-year-olds and Coach Richard Bennett says his team comes into district play this season with a bullseye on their back.
“I beleive we’ve got a good shot,” he said. “We’re a year older and a lot bigger.”
All-Star Hunter Best said he believes the expectations are good for the team as they vie for the district title while Tyler Robertson said he knows all opposing teams will be gunning for the team that won state as 14-year-olds.
The 15-year-old Russell County team is coached by Richard Bennett, David Aaron and Josh Popplewell.
