In July 25 IssueRussell County NewsBy Ron Cowell, ColumnistThis past weekend was a very busy time for the Ol Boys Toys Car Club.
It started off with their monthly car show held in K Mart parking lot on Saturday. According to club members this was the biggest turn out they had ever had in July. Usually it is really hot and a lot of people avoid the shows and Cruise Ins because of the heat. This year Mother Nature helped out and it was a beautiful day for the show. This show is judged by the public and they had a hard time with this one. There were so many beautiful cars there.
There were even a few cars that came from out of state for the show. It was a day full of fun with Music provided by Denver Wilson and a lot of fellowship.
I have had several folks tell me they drove past and saw the show going on but just didn’t take the time to stop and look. The shows and Cruise Ins are open to everyone. If you want to enter a car or just come and look you are welcome. The club will be holding their next show in the K Mart parking lot on Saturday, Aug. 15th.
Then on Sunday the Club had their annual picnic at Russell Springs City Park. All the other car clubs were invited to join in with them and enjoy the day. I never saw so much good food. There were Smoked Ribs, Burgers and Hot dogs and all the ladies brought a dish.
Just to set back and look, made you feel like it was 40 or 50 years ago. There were so many cars from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s there, it was just a sight that is hard to explain. They even an old Juke Box there playing the oldies. All you had to do was walk up and push the buttons to hear the oldies you wanted to hear.
The club told me that the crowd had doubled in size from last year’s picnic. What made the day even more special was they invited all the clubs in the area to share in the day of fun.. I’ll tell you what, if you were a member from another club and could not make the picnic you missed a day of good food, fellowship and relaxation.
The Ol Boys Toys is one of the oldest car clubs in Russell County and do a lot of good things for the community. On behalf of the Outsiders and The Lake Cumberland Antique Car Club and other clubs that attended the picnic, I send out a big thank you to the Ol Boys Toys for having us there. We all had a great time.
President of the Ol Boys Toys, Billy Lawson wanted to thank everyone who came and made the day a big success.
The summer is slowly coming to and end so you want to attend as many of these events as you can. If you never have attended one you will be surprised and well pleased. There are no strangers there, as you walk through the crowd people will start talking to you and telling you about the old car they had just like the one setting there, or their Dad or Grandpa had one just like it. The smiles and memories just flow at these shows and Cruise Ins.
Coming up for the rest of this month will be the Summer Nights Cruise Block Party on Friday, July 24th at the Center for Rural Development in Somerset. Then on Saturday the 25th will be the Monthly Summer Nights Cruise in Somerset.
The first Friday in August Sonic Drive in has their Block Part at 6:00 PM .
The second Friday, August 14th The “OUTSIDERS will have their Cruise In. That will also be held at Sonic and gets underway at 6:00PM. Oldies provided by “Ron’s Rockin Oldies”. There is always plenty of door prizes and a 50/50 raffle that not only car owners can win but the public as well.
Then on Saturday, August 15th The Ol Boys Toys will be back at it in the K Mart Parking lot from 3:00PM to 6:00PM with another Car Show. There are trophies, door prizes 50/50 and a whole lot of great looking cars, trucks, motorcycles and Rat Rods.
Then we are back where we started again with the Summer Nights Cruise In and Block Party on August 28th and 29th.
One show I would like to tell you about also will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12th at the Old Houchen’s building. This show is being put on by Terry Stevens of Stevens Pipe and Steel, all proceeds from the show are going to Ronald McDonald House so you will want o get out to see this one. It’s for a very good cause. I’ll have more on this show as it gets closer. Rumor has it that Ronald McDonald will be there in person.
