In My Opinion ... by Ron Phillips
In Sept. 26 Issue
Russell County News

Can you hear me now? These words were uttered hundreds of times by the “Verizon Test Man” as a part of promoting the reliability of Verizon Wireless. Today these words are being directed at the members of Congress by the very people who put them there.

Congress has been ignoring their constituents and dedicating most of their time to kissing up to their largest supporters and their own political party.

Now that the sleeping giant is awake, these same members of congress are starting to realize that the very people who put them in office are the same ones that will vote them out.

All of you have to realize that we are making a difference. Things are starting to happen and Congress has no choice but to listen. The House and the Senate have both voted to stop all federal funding to ACORN, the nation's largest community organization group.

This group, a long time supporter of the Democratic Party, has been indicted for voter fraud in several states across the country.

Even with all of the indictments and controversy, there were 75 democrats that recently voted to continue funding ACORN with our tax dollars.

Another spending travesty that has recently been challenged is the John Murtha Airport. John Murtha a 19 term Congressman from Pennsylvania is considered one of "the kings of pork" on Capitol Hill by taxpayer watchdog groups.

He has racked in almost $200 million from Washington to fund the Murtha Airport. Much of the funding has come in the form of legislative earmarks that are attached to bills before Congress. The John Murtha's Airport is beautiful!

According to published reports it has a $7 million air traffic control tower, a $14 million hangar and an $18 million state-of-the-art runway. It's got everything a modern airport should be equipped with.

Now, if they only had planes flying there. It has three flights a day and one guess where all three of the flights go to: Washington, D.C. Thanks to Murtha, the airport has received over $150 million in taxpayer funding and then another $800,000 in stimulus money to repave an "alternate runway."

This state of the art airport handled 6,700 passengers last year compared to Barrow, Alaska (320 miles north of the Arctic Circle) which handled 37,000. Bet they didn’t get $800,000 to pave their backup runway!

There was a vote before the Senate on September 18th to limited funding to this financial disaster. The majority voted to continue funding this albatross. Here are the Senators votes on the Amendment. The “Yea’s” voted to stop the foolishness!

While here in Kentucky, we can be proud of the common sense demonstrated by Senators Mitch McConnell and Jim Bunning, it is clear that the lawmakers that voted “Nay” in other states have to go.

Please reach out to your friends in these states and pass the word. I do believe that we are being heard in Washington.

They realize now more than ever, that they work for us! We voted for change and were fix ‘in to make some big ones.

By the way, if you’re not watching Glenn Beck you need too. You’ll be surprised what you just might learn.

He also has a brand new book out called “Arguing with Idiots”. One review says; It happens to all of us: You're minding your own business, when some idiot informs you that guns are evil, the Prius will save the planet, or the rich have to finally start paying their fair share of taxes.

May God bless…
