In Oct. 1 IssueThere were close to 100 people fishing in the "hatchery creek" Tuesday at the Second Annual Catch a Smile Senior Fishing Derby.
Program organizer Amanda Patrick said they had 90 people registered for the event.
"That's a big increase from last year," Patrick said. "We had around 40 registered for the 2008 event."
Hatchery Director James Gray said he'd been concerned that the change to cooler weather could discourage some from coming, but was pleasantly surprised.
"I think we had a church group from Ohio," said Gray, adding that they had worked to promote the event beyond the lake area.
"It was truly a wonderful turn out with great weather," said Patrick.
She thanked the generous support of sponsors and over 25 Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery team members, volunteers and others for the positive results.
One individual was reportedly injured when a man fell and was taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment.
"I believe he hurt his back when he slipped at the creek," Patrick said. She added that he is expected to be okay.
