In Oct. 15 IssueBy Derek AaronTimes Journal Sports EditorThe Russell County Lady Laker volleyball team won their second straight 45th District tournament after defeating Monticello and McCreary Central on Tuesday night at raucous Russell County High School gymnasium.
Against Monticello in the semifinals, Russell County won two in a row and swept the finals against Wayne County as well, winning two very competitive, close matches.
"The first match it was very important that we beat Monticello because runners-up and winners go to region," said Lady Laker Head Coach Sarah Roy.
"After we got that win out of the way we definitely wanted the championship."
Roy said to win back-to-back district titles proved that the program was heading in the right direction.
"I think the girls were extremely ready to play and the fan support was great," she said.
"As a winner going into the region we'll draw a runner-up and that is really important."
She said the RCHS volleyball fans had been devoted all season and Tuesday night was no different.
"We've also had a large student section and that helps our momentum so much," Roy said. "The home court definitely helped to our advantage."
Going into the 12th region tournament next week in Danville, Roy said her players must play their game and not play unto the level of the competition.
"We've got to play to our strengths," she said.
Four Lady Lakers were named to the all-district team: Sarah Shaw, Tyla Bailey, Casey Keaton and Sophie Koester.
Roy is assisted by Kelly Pierce.
