They come in as feeder calves, they go out, as steak. A&S Livestock, and A&S Feed, Has branched out to serve as a meat packing house, offering both retail and wholesale meat to customers in Russell and Adair counties.
The man in charge, Mark Antle, said the company takes full service beyond what most people would envision.
He said they will sell local beef farmers young cattle, sell them the feed, incinerate any animals that meet an early end and they raise a select heard for butchering and sale as meat.
In freezer after freezer at the feedmill there are thick deep-red steaks, packages of hamburger meat, and pork cuts.
"Jeremy Hill is the person who handles that," Antle said. "We just challenge people to a cook off and it is easy for them to see how good this meat is."
Antle said they have added local restaurants like Manners and the State Dock to their customer list simply by letting the cook prepare what they sell.
"It is good meat," said Rick Mann of Manners' Café. "I mean you can add any of those good adjectives, great, super all of that."
He explained that having local beef that hasn't been trucked half the way across the country is going to be better tasting.
"Any time you can buy something that is local and fresh it is going to be better," Mann said.
Antle said that in addition to the beef they raise the company is selling pork and other meat products from local farmers.
In addition to being served at local restaurants the meat is available to consumers at the feed store on west Ky-55, near the Adair County line 270-343-4680.
