In Feb. 25 IssueWatching the acrobatics and high flying maneuvers of senior guard Robbie Bell, the newest member of the Laker 1,000 point club, is what has brought many people out to Laker Gym this season.
Bell, the Laker's leading scorer, said his time as a Laker has been a terrific experience.
“It is hard to look at it and think it is almost over,” Bell said. “It has went by real fast.”
Looking back on his career, Bell recounts the 71-59 victory district title game victory over Metcalfe County his sophomore season as his favorite memory.
“That team was loaded with seniors and was a big favorite,” he said.
Russell County then went on to win a first round region game against Barren County before falling to Bowling Green and finishing the season 14-14.
That shows the type of team player that Robbie is. Many players would have chosen the time they scored their 1,000th point, but not Robbie.
Bell, a 4th region second-team player, credits Coach Willie Feldhaus for his increasing improvement over the years.
“Coach pushes you to go that extra step,” he said.
“He knows how fast you can go and how hard you can go and he's always telling us in practice 'don't go comfortable speed, go full speed' and we take that and go with it.”
Bell's mother, Katrena Popplewell, also gives her son the support he needs by attending all of his games, be them home or away.
“Most my family was there the night I scored my 1,000th point,” he said. Bell said he felt honored to be in such a prestigious club with all the past 1,000 point scorers.
“I feel honored to look up at those names already up there and be a part of it,” he said.
Bell also said playing with 1,000 point scorer and former Laker Bryon Ellis the previous few seasons was also an honor.
When the season comes to an end Bell said he will miss his teammates and playing games the most.
“We goof off and have a good time,” he said of this year's team. “We're pretty close.”
Bell then said he would miss performing in front of the large crowds in Laker Gym, but few will forget the impact that Robbie Bell had on the Laker program in his career here.
