After several match postponements due to inclement weather, the Russell County High School Boys and Girls Tennis teams finally opened the 2010 season last week with both teams going 1-1.

In the opener on Tuesday, March 30th, the squads went down to defeat to the Somerset Briar Jumpers boys and girls teams which already had several matches under their belts.  In boys’ action, Russell County lost 8-1.  The doubles team of Kerry Kingry and Cody Womack secured the lone win, a 6-1 thrashing of Mustafa El-Kalliny and Justin Bivens.  In girls’ play, the Lady Briar Jumpers scored a 9-0 victory handily winning every match.

Both teams bounced back from their tough openers scoring huge victories over the Adair County Indians on Thursday, April 1st.  Neither squad was “fooling” around as the Lady Lakers crushed the Lady Indians 8-1 and the Laker Boys thumped the Indians 7-2.

The Lady Lakers were led by Kayla Marcum, Donovyn Coffey, and Alisha Dockery who each won singles and doubles matches.  Newcomer, Shelby Maldonaldo, scored her first victory as a Lady Laker with a 6-2 outcome.  Eight different Lady Lakers helped secure the win.  

All six Laker Boys won their singles matches led by Scott Hoover’s 6-0 blanking of Levi Ramage. Zakk West and Jonathon Meece secured their first victories as Lakers.  Kyle Garner won at the three seed position 6-3. Kerry Kingry and Cody Womack took victories in both singles and doubles play staying undefeated in their doubles matches.

The team’s next matches will be at Pulaski County on  Monday, April 12th .
