The Russell County Laker Boys Tennis Team scored a 9-0 victory on Monday night, April 19th, as they smashed the home-standing Indians of Southwestern High School.  

The charge was led by Kyle Garner, Kerry Kingry, Zakk West, and Cody Womack who each won both their singles and doubles matches.  

Jonathan Meece and Kody Pickett added singles wins while Brandon Roark and Ben Roy scored a doubles victory.

The Lady Lakers were not as fortunate as they suffered a 9-0 loss to the Lady Indians; however, the match was much closer than the final score indicated as several Lady Lakers lost heartbreaking sets.  

Donovyn Coffey dropped her match 7-6 losing the tie-breaker 8-6, and the doubles team of Kayla Marcum and Alisha Dockery lost 7-6 dropping a hard fought tie-breaker 11-9.

In matches from last week: On Tuesday, the Lady Lakers earned a 3-3 tie against McCreary County in a match shortened by darkness.   

The squads were only able to complete singles play.  Katie Dalton scored a 6-3 win at No. 1 singles while Kayla Marcum and Shelby Maldonaldo earned the other two wins.

The darkness came at a bad time for the Laker Boys who were trailing 4-2 after singles play.  Kingry and Womack both secured 6-0 wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots and were leading their doubles match 3-0 when the match was halted.

There wasn’t much to write home about in Thursday’s match against the top-rated Wayne County Cardinal Boys and Girls Squads.  

The visiting Cardinals and Lady Cardinal took both matches 9-0.

The team’s next match will be Thursday, April 22nd, at Wayne County.
