Behind a strong pitching performance from freshman Tyler Robertson, the Russell County Lakers downed host Clinton County, 10-1, Monday in their first game of the 16th district tournament.
The win sends the Lakers to Wednesday’s district title game (which ended too late for this edition) against the Metcalfe County Hornets who downed the Cumberland County Panthers on Monday.
The 27-8 Lakers used a big eight run 5th inning to catapult ahead in waht was, until then, a tight ballgame.
Coach David Rexroat’s Lakers scored three more times in the inning to take a 9-1 lead into the 6th inning.
The Lakers added and additional run in the bottom of the 6th to pad their lead to 10-1.
Robertson gave up only four hits to the Bulldogs while striking out four batters to earn his sixth win of the season.
Robertson also led Russell County with three hits while sophomores Blake Aaron and Hunter Best each had two hits apiece.
The Lakers finished their regular season strong last week, winning a home game against the Southwestern Warriors, 8-3, and downing Lincoln County on the road, 5-0.
Caleb Russell picked up the win over Southwestern while Robertson also picked up the win over Lincoln County.
