Casey County wins region; three Lakers advance to second round
In June 3 Issue

It was no surprise that Casey County won the 12th Region High School Boys Tennis Tournament held recently at Berea College.   The Rebels were led by brothers, Kyle and Brad Jeffries, both of whom had perfect 17-0 regular season singles’ records.  Kyle defended his Singles’ Title with four impressive wins including a 6-1; 6-0 thrashing of  No. 2 seed Colin Hart of Lincoln County in the finals.  Brad made it to the semi-finals before losing to Hart 6-2; 6-3.

Three Laker Boys scored first round victories.  Kerry Kingry stormed back from an 0-4 first set deficit in his match with Pulaski County’s Cody Harris winning 7 games in a row en route to a 6-4; 6-2 win over his Maroon opponent.  Kyle Garner and Zakk West notched a convincing 6-3; 6-2 win over Parsons and Melhuish of Madison Southern in a first round doubles match-up.

Cody Womack had a tough first round draw in rising star Corbin Kirksey of Wayne County.  Kirksey scored a 6-2; 6-0 victory.  Kirksey later pushed the No. 3 seed of tournament to the brink before dropping a hard fought match, 6-4; 6-4.  Scott Hoover and

Jonathon Meece lost to Staples and Ibiaste of Wayne County 6-0; 6-1 in their doubles duel.

In second round play, the three advancing Lakers went up against seeded players.  Kingry dropped his match, 6-1; 6-2, to No. 8 seed, David Weigel of Somerset.  Garner and West had an even tougher draw losing 6-0; 6-0 to No. 1 seed and eventual region champs, Lark and Compton of Berea.

At the KHSAA Boys State Tournament held at the University of Kentucky this past weekend, Kyle Jeffries won three matches defeating two seeded players on his way to a quarter-final match-up and loss against No. 1 seed, Beck Pennington of  Bowling Green.

Jeffries ended his high school tennis career with a singles’ record of 82-2.  His only two losses came at the State tournament the past two years.
