In June 3 IssueThe Russell County Laker baseball team advanced to its second 4th region championship game in two years with big wins over Bowling Green, 4-2, and Allen County-Scottsville, 7-2, early this week.
The games, which are being played at Nick Denes Field on the campus of Western Kentucky University, both saw big bats for coach David Rexroat’s Lakers.
Against Bowling Green on Monday, the Lakers found themselves down 2-0 until a bases loaded triple by sophomore Hunter Best broke the dry spell for Russell County.
Blake Aaron, Lucas Whittle and Jordan Best all scored on the hit. Freshman Tyler Robertson, who also had an RBI double in the game, picked up the win on the mound, striking out three Purples.
On Tuesday night, the Lakers dueled with the Allen County-Scottsville Patriots and came away victorious after another bases loaded triple, this one by senior Bryson McFall, late in the game gave the Lakers the momentum.
Several more Russell County runs tallied and Hunter Best picked up the win on the mound.
Senior centerfielder Jordan Best had a spectacular leapin catch on the warning track to help preserve the Laker lead as ACS tried to mount a rally down the stretch.
Russell County plays Warren Central on Wednesday night at Nick Denes Field for the 4th region title. That game ended too late for this edition but results will be in next week’s paper.
