In July 15 IssueOn Monday night the Laker baseball middle and high school programs held a joint banquet in the Russell County High School cafeteria.
Awards were given out to the following players: 7th grade pitching award, Dylan Kerr, 7th grade defense award, Grant Best, 7th grade hitting award, Taylor Grider, 8th grade pitching award, Alex Turner, 8th grade defense award, Brennan Coffey and 8th grade hitting award, Evan Fletcher.
Junior Varsity awards went to Cody Robertson for Most RBI’s JV Highest Batting Average went to Evan Selby with .462. Most wins and hits in JV action went to Garret Stephens.
Varsity awards went to Martin Cross for most wins with eight, Hunter Best has a .519 batting average, 42 runs scored, 32 RBI and 69 hits, a single season Laker record.
Dillon Downey won the defensive award while Tyler Robertson had the lowest ERA on the pitching staff at 1.04 to go along with seven wins and four saves.
Head Coaches David Rexroat and Chris Taylor lauded their team’s efforts over the past season.
Rexroat said this year’s team, with a 30-9 record, tied the 1990 Laker baseball team for most wins in a season by the program.
Prior to the awards being given out the Laker baseball Boosters, under the direction of Darell Selby, served a meal for all the players and their parents.
The Laker baseball program looks bright as many new faces make their way to the high school level next year from the middle school level who combined for a 36-6 record this season.
The Lakers said their final goodbyes to seniors Zach Carney, Jordan Best, Bryson McFall and Dillon Downey.
