Teams from Russell, Adair and Allen County competed in the Finley Cup Youth League football tournament Staurday at Finley Field at Laker Stadium.
Both 3rd-4th and 5th-6th grade tournaments were held.
3rd and 4th Recap
In its first round game the Russell County team fell behind 6-0 on a trick play pulled off by the Allen County White Team. The Lakers tied the game in dramatic fashion with only 41 seconds left to go in the game on a good run by Ryan Yates.
In overtime the Lakers took the ball first and scored on fourth and goal as Yates followed some great blocking and got in the endzone.
The defense then stood tall and held the Patriots offense in check stopping them on fourth down to secure the win 12-6.
The Little Lakers then played an Allen County Red team, which had defeated the Adair County Indians in their first round game, for the championship.
The Lakers drove the ball down the field on their first possesion of the game only to have the drive stall as a patriot defender made a good play and intercepted a Ben Abrell pass. The Patriots scored late in the first half and took a 6-0 lead into half time.
The second half saw both teams play hard.
The most exciting play of the day took place as quarterback Ben Abrell followed big blocks from his full back and wide reciever and broke loose for a 70 plus yard touchdown.
A two point conversion by Yates put the Lakers on top 8-6.
The Patriots came back in the fourth quarter however and drove for what proved to be the winning touchdown as the Patriots held on for a narrow 12-8 win.
Coaches for the 3rd and 4th grade team were Jamie McCormack, Scott Hamm, Jackie Wilson, Chris Yates and Keith Johnson

The final touchdown of the game came on a kick off return by Tate Richardson.
In the Championship game the Lakers fell to a very good Adair County team 36-0.
