In Dec. 24 IssueRussell County NewsTen Russell County children had a brighter Christmas than they would have had this year because of local law enforcements "Shop With a Cop" program.
The Fraternal Order of Police program began as an effort to make an outreach to local children whose families needed a little extra help at Christmas. The donations, collected throughout the year from local businesses and individuals allowed for a wonderful shopping spree at the local K-Mart. Each child had $125 to spend on clothing and another $75 to spend on toys.
Troy Young, President of the Fraternal Order of Police, said the event was very successful. "We really appreciate all the donations given throughout the year. It's for a really good cause and it helps make a positive impact on these children's lives," said Young.
After the shopping spree, the very happy children were back on the bus to head back to the Auditorium/Natatorium for pizza and desert. Santa Claus made a special visit to give each child a wrapped present.
Yet one more surprise awaited the jubilant children as each one was given a brand new bicycle of their very own.
