In Jan. 6 IssueThe Russell County Lakers finished the First Southern Bank Roy’s BBQ Classic with a victory last Wednesday as they defeated Caverna, 67-51.
Russell County was led in the win by Tyler Robertson with 23 points and Blake Aaron, who hit 5 of 6 three pointers, with 20 points.
Martin Cross added seven points for Russell County, who shot 56 percent from the field in the win. Also scoring for Russell County was Dustin Pierce and Nick Coffey with three points each, Barton Mann with two points and Nick Britt with one point.
Caverna was led in scoring by Jordan Rice, who tallied 18 points in the loss.
The Russell County Lady Lakers also finished up play in the same tournament on Wednesday as they fell to host Russellville 54-49.
Leading the way for the Lady Lakers was Julie Wethington with 17 points. Both Blair Hoover and Lindsay Ramage finished with 10 points each. Ramage also finished with 11 rebounds while Hoover finished with eight rebounds.
Russell County shot just 37 percent from the field in the loss and was outscored 20-13 in the final quarter. Sophomore point guard LeeAnn Grider again missed the game with an ankle injury.
Grider is hopeful to play in Friday’s matchup with district foe Cumberland County in Burkesville.
