In May 5 IssueIt has been an up and down week for the Russell County Laker baseball team as they have won three games and lost two, both of those in the Louisville Invitational Tournament last weekend.
The Lakers defeated rival Adair County 8-4 Monday night at Laker Field, avenging a disappointing loss to the Indians a week ago. Garret Stephens picked up the win on the mound while Martin Cross got the save.
Leading the way at the plate for Coach David Rexroat’s team was Tyler Robertson who went 2-4 with 3 RBI. Blake Aaron also went 2-4 with an RBI while Cross went 1-3 with an RBI.
At this past weekend’s Louisville Invitational Tournament, the Lakers went 1-2, defeating Christian County 13-11 and losing to Lexington Catholic 7-2 and Pleasure Ridge Park 7-6 in a heartbreaker.
In the game against PRP, Jalen Bennett led the way with 4 RBI on 3 hits while Taylor Hutchison and Garret Stephens each had an RBI. Hunter Best also garnered 3 hits in the game.
In the victory against Christian County, Evan Selby went 3-4 with 3 RBI, Hunter Best went 4-5 with 2 RBI and a homerun, Jalen Bennett with 3-4 with 2 RBI. Both Tyler Robertson went and Garret Stephens each had an RBI with Robertson going 3-4.
Best picked up the win on the mound in relief of starter Hutchison while Selby picked up the save.
In the LexCath loss, the Lakers were led by Robertson, who went 2-4 with one RBI. Best also went 2-4 in the game.
Last Thursday, the Lakers picked up a big 20-run shutout win over district foe Cumberland County. Cross pitched a five inning no-hitter as the Laker bats dismantled the visiting Panthers.
Best, Robertson, Bennett and Lucas Whittle each had 2 RBI while Lakers Stephens, Hutchison, Selby, Coffey, Kimbler, Bray, Blakey, Hadley and Bertram each had one RBI apiece. With the win, the Lakers wrapped up the one seed in the 16th district tournament.
