In May 12 IssueThe Lady Laker softball team went 1-4 in action since last Thursday defeating Cumberland County 18-3 and being shut out by Clinton County and twice by Southwestern.
“I don’t know what happened in the Clinton game,” head coach Stephanie McGowan said of Thursday’s home game. “They just literally did not show up for that game. I was disappointed that we had a game like that at this point in the season against another district team.”
Russell County did not get a hit in the game.
“After the Clinton game, we wondered what kind of team was going to show up for the Cumberland game. They were either going to do one thing or another, either roll over and let Cumberland take advantage, or come out and do everything they could to make up for that first game,” she said.
“They went with option 2. They went from a no hitter, to hitting .500 as a team. In the past 4 games, we have had and team total of 3 strikeouts. They were aggressive, they didn’t lay back and they scored 4 runs on 2 outs to win the game in the 4th. I’ll take that every time.”
Baylee Hadley was 3-3, 2 doubles, a triple, 4RBI, Sara McClure was 2-2, 2 RBI and Sky Covarrubias was 2-3.
“Against Southwestern Monday Cheyenne Simpson pitched a great game,” she said. “Taylor Irvin and Abby Adams pitched a great second game. They took advantage of a couple of our errors and we couldn’t pull the hits together to get runs of our own. Our girls hit the ball hard. It was just one of those days where everything was just right at someone. Overall, our pitch selection was good. Defensively, there were things we didn’t do right and there were things that we were glad to see show up in a game. We had some diving plays last night for outs and some that saved runs from scoring. It was nice to see girls laying out for the ball. Sets the standard that they will do whatever it takes so that the ball will not get through them.”
Southwestern Game 1- Sky Covarrubias 2-3
Southwestern Game 2- Sara McClure, Taylor Irvin and Natalie Loy were all 1-2
“Right now we’ve got 7 regular season games left before we start district play,” McGowan said.
“So, we’ve got 7 games to pull everything together and have it ready for when it really matters. We are running out of next games and tomorrows, so we need to make sure we are leaving it all out on the field today.”
