In June 18 IssueBy John ThompsonNews-Register ReporterMajor changes are taking place at Lake Cumberland Golf Club, formerly Links at Lily Creek, according to the club's general manager. This past Thursday a massive sandstone rock was placed in the front corner of the clubhouse grounds.
"That's going to be a pretty good conversation piece when it's all done," said General Manager and Golf Professional Bobby Cooke.
The 22 ton (44,000 pound) sandstone rock is but one of many renovations happening at the course. "We're completely rebuilding the golf course," said Cooke. "New tees, new greens, new bunkers; everything. It will be a different golf course when it's done. Our goal is, when we're finished, we want to be one of the top five golf courses in the state of Kentucky."
The former, financially struggling Links at Lily Creek was purchased early in the year by local businessman Brian Cooper, owner of Tantus Tobacco.
Lake Cumberland Golf Course is located on Boat Dock Rd, Hwy 92, one of the major entrance roads to Lake Cumberland and leads to the popular Jamestown Resort and Marina. A very successful publicly accessed golf course can be major draw for tourism in Russell County, according to officials.
The courses renovations include extensive work on creating an aesthetically pleasing experience for golfers; waterfalls, rock structures and new ponds, along with a complete overhaul of the clubhouse are in the works.
