In June 25 IssueBy Kim GrahamNews-Register ReporterSpotlight Salon on Main Street in Russell Springs gained a new hair stylist and color specialist, Justin Hogan, two weeks ago.
Hogan, a 2003 graduate of Russell County High School, graduated from PJ's College of Cosmetology in Louisville last September.
After living in Louisville, Hogan moved back home to help care for his aging grandparents and soon came to work with Spot Light Salon owner, Suzanne Harris.
"(Styling hair) is the only thing I've ever done that I've never dreaded coming to work," said Hogan.
He said losing a job was the catalyst to follow his dream into the business of beauty.
"(Hair styling) is a passion I've always had," Hogan said. "After I lost my job at Oakwood, it was a good opportunity to go back to school."
Hair color artistry is Hogan's favorite part of being a stylist and he said he plans to get certified as a Redkin Color Artist.
Another service Hogan said he enjoys is infusion hair extensions, a strand-by-strand hair extension technique designed to lengthen, add fullness, and blend well with natural hair.
He said the extensions last from three to six months.
In an effort to stay current with the latest techniques, Hogan attended a hair show in Nashville, TN last February and took a Scruples products class, Redkin haircutting class, and a Paul Mitchell class.
"One thing about this profession is you're always learning," said Hogan. "It takes someone with passion to style hair."
His passion for the business is evident in his treatment of clients whether they are established or have just walked in for a haircut.
Establishing an immediate rapport, identifying common interests, and being a good listener are attributes of Hogan's service.
Shelley Harris of Russell Springs, a walk in client, shared a small world moment with Hogan when she realized she knew his mother.
Hogan put his new client at ease and taught her styling techniques she could use at home with a very conversational style.
Harris was impressed with her first hair cut and style from Hogan.
"He did a fine job," Harris said. "I'll be back."
Until August, Hogan said his hours are mostly from 5:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. and after August, he will work 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. with after-hours hair services scheduled by appointment only.
Currently the two stylists at the salon are Suzanne Harris and Hogan.
Suzanne said she's known Hogan since he was a little boy.
"I used to do Justin's hair as a kid," said Harris.
Harris said she's looking for another stylist to fill an additional station at the salon which provides a full range of services with flexible appointment scheduling to accommodate clients' needs.
From hot hair trends like feathers and fusion hair extensions to the traditional cuts, color, and perms, Spotlight Salon presents an array of offerings.
They sell hair styling products, shampoo and conditioner as well as providing acrylic nails and tanning bed access.
The salon accepts appointments and walk-ins are welcome Monday through Saturday.
Hogan said he is open to working some Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. by appointment only.
